Vegetarian events and gatherings are popping up everywhere, and vegetarian communities are thriving. This social trend is making vegetarianism more popular, and with it, the need for more awareness and understanding. It’s important to have a general understanding of vegetarianism and the nutritional guidelines before embarking on a vegetarian diet.
The nutritional benefits of plant-based diets are one of the reasons why they have become so popular. First of all, plant-based foods don’t contain any cholesterol, which helps to maintain a healthy circulatory system. This reduces the risk of hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and stroke. They”re also rich in water and fiber, which makes them very satiating and effective in preventing obesity, treating constipation and maintaining a healthy digestive system. Consuming large amounts of plant-based foods can also help prevent diabetes and its complications. This is why vegetarianism has become so popular, as it”s a great prevention method for many of the adult and chronic diseases mentioned above. There were once many experts who criticized vegetarianism and strongly warned vegetarians against it. However, in recent years, academics have come to recognize the health benefits of a vegetarian diet and have begun to explore ways to make it healthier. In particular, with the growing awareness of the negative environmental impact of meat consumption, vegetarianism has become more than just a personal health choice, but a sustainable way of eating that protects the health of the planet.
However, eating vegetables and fruits indiscriminately can lead you away from a healthy life. A vegetarian diet can lead to deficiencies in nutrients that we typically get from animal products, such as essential amino acids, essential fatty acids, riboflavin, vitamin D, vitamin B12, iron, zinc, and calcium, which are essential for basic metabolism and life support. Fortunately, essential fatty acids, essential amino acids, and most minerals can be easily met through soy foods. However, vitamin B12 is a nutrient that can only be found in animal products. Vitamin B12 is important for red blood cell production and metabolism, so a deficiency can be devastating.
